Born: October 6, 1955 - Jackson, Missouri

College: University of Minnesota, Quarterback

National Football League – Playing Career

  • Undrafted in 1976.
  • 1977 - 1978 - Pittsburg Steelers

Signed as a free agent, played as a defensive back and special teams player. A Member of the 1978 Super Bowl champion Steelers.

  • 1979 - Traded to San Francisco 49ers.
  • 1980 - Finished his playing career in the training camp of the New York Giants.

National Football League – Coaching Career

  • 1980 - University of Minnesota, Assistant coach.
  • 1981 - 1988 - Pittsburg Steelers, Assistant coach.
  • 1989 - 2001 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers, head coach,
  • 2002 - 2009 Indianapolis Colts, Head coach.

On Feb. 27, 2007, the Colts defeated Chicago Bears 29-17 to win the XLI Super Bowl in Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida.

At the conclusion of the 2009 season Dungy retired

Head Coaching Highlight

In 2007 Tony Dungy became the first African American NFL head coach to win the Super Bowl and was only the sixth man to both play in and be the head coach of a Super Bowl Championship team.

Broadcasting

2009 - Joined NBC Sports as a colour analyst for the network's weekly Sunday Night Football pregame show, Football Night in America.

Personal & Civic Involvement

In August 2007, President George W. Bush appointed Tony Dungy a member of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation - - a 25-member council representing leaders from government, business, entertainment, athletics and non-profit organizations committed to growing the spirit of service and civic participation.

Author

Dungy's memoir, Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices and Priorities of a Winning Life, released July 10, 2007, reached No. 1 on the hardcover nonfiction section of the New York Times Best Seller list on August 3. By January 10, 2008, Quiet Strength had reached 1,000,000 copies sold.

Dungy claims he's actually gotten more satisfaction from the success of Quiet Strength than the Super Bowl win because, "I've gotten so many calls and letters from people saying they really got something out of it, something that helped them."
