Career Highlights:

Helped OHA Hamilton Red Wings win 1962 Memorial Cup; made his NHL debut with Detroit Red Wings in 1962 against Toronto Maple Leafs; playing for Team Canada in the eight-game 1972 Summit Series against Russia Henderson scored the winning goals in Russia in games sixth and seven to tie the series at 3-3-1. With 34 seconds remaining Henderson scored on his own rebound to win the series for Canada. It was his seventh goal in eight games and made him a national hero; Henderson has been inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame on two occasions, as an individual in 1995, and in 2005 with his 1972 Team Canada teammates. The International Ice Hockey Federation will induct him into the IIHF Hall of Fame in May, 2013. His game-worn Team Canada jersey sold on auction for over $1 million in 2010, thought to be the highest price ever paid for a hockey sweater.

 

Personal:

The father of three daughters, Henderson became a born again Christian in 1975 and studied to become a minister before returning to Toronto to join Campus Crusade for Christ, traveling across Canada giving talks and speeches, particularly to businessmen. He received an honourary degree from Tyndale University College and Seminary in 2007. He is the author of five books including Shooting For Glory, 1992; How Hockey Explains Canada, 2011; The Goal of My Life, 2012. In 2009 he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
